1. Information We Access & Core Permissions
OverlandMesh requires specific device permissions to function as an off-road navigation tool and Meshtastic radio companion. Below is an explicit breakdown of each permission:
📍 Precise & Background Location
Why it's needed: OverlandMesh plots your live location, heading, altitude, and ground speed on topographic and satellite trail maps.
Background Tracking: When you tap "Record Track", the app utilizes background location tracking via a persistent foreground service. This enables continuous GPX track recording even when your phone is mounted on a vehicle dash, tucked into a pocket, or when the screen is locked. Background location ceases immediately when you tap "Stop Recording".
📡 Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
Why it's needed: Bluetooth permissions (BLUETOOTH_SCAN, BLUETOOTH_CONNECT) are used solely to discover and pair with your external Meshtastic LoRa radio hardware (e.g., LilyGO T-Beam, WisMesh Pocket, Heltec).
Bluetooth is never used for commercial advertising, beacon tracking, or location harvesting. Telemetry packets received over Bluetooth are decoded locally on your device.
📷 Camera & Photo Library
Why it's needed: If you choose to document an off-road hazard, scenic overlook, or campsite, you can take or select a photo to attach to an offline waypoint.
Photos are saved in your device's local application storage and are never uploaded or analyzed by external machine vision servers.
2. Accountless Architecture & Offline Storage
OverlandMesh does not require you to create an account, register an email, or sign in with social credentials.
- All offline topographic map regions, user waypoints, tracks, and custom channels are stored strictly in local device SQLite storage.
- Optional Community Cloud Sync: If you explicitly choose to sync trail hazards to the community database when internet is restored, only the anonymized waypoint coordinates and obstacle descriptions are transmitted.
3. Third-Party Services & Map Providers
To render base map layers and search worldwide off-road trails, the app communicates with:
- Apple Maps (MapKit) & Google Maps SDK: Used to render native vector, satellite, and terrain map tiles. Subject to Apple and Google privacy policies.
- OpenStreetMap / Overpass API: Used to fetch public trail geometries and contour information.
- No Tracking SDKs: We do not include third-party ad networks (like AdMob or Facebook Audience Network) or invasive user-tracking analytics in the mobile application.
4. Data Ownership, Export & Deletion
You retain complete ownership over all your trails, recorded GPX coordinates, and photos.
You can export any recorded track at any time as a standard .gpx file to your device or share it with others. You can permanently delete any waypoint, track, or cached offline map region directly inside the app with a single tap. Uninstalling the app permanently erases the local SQLite database.
5. Children's Privacy
OverlandMesh is designed for general audiences and off-road recreationists. We do not knowingly collect personal identifiable information from children under the age of 13.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in legal requirements or app features. Updates will be posted to this webpage with a revised "Last Updated" timestamp.
